Rubens’ Tube is an awesome demo and here we take it to the next level with a two-dimensional ‘Pyro Board’. This shows unique standing wave patters of sound in the box.
The pressure variations due to the sound waves affect the flow rate of flammable gas from the holes in the Pyro Board and therefore affect the height and colour of flames. This is interesting for visualizing standing wave patterns and simply awesome to watch when put to music. Thank you to Sune Nielsen and everyone at Aarhus for sharing this demonstration with me! Amazing visuals – this is the sort of think they should teach in school –
all of a sudden standing waves become fascinating and thought provoking
instead of deathly dull!
It looks as though the hole pitch is roughly 1cm but I cannot work out what
diameter you selected for the holes. I am guessing around 3mm but would
appreciate knowing the correct size so I can have a go at making one
without having to buy multiple sheets of perforated steel to see which ones
work!

Nothing as fun a playing with fire.
I wonder what it would look like if there were more of these used for one
song but each was wired to a certain element. One for the beats,… And you
could manipulate with it like and eqaliser making awesome light shows. It
would take different gasses, different colours of the flames… Someone
with me?

What I love so much about this is that the fire isn’t only a visual thing
you can hear the flames in between the beats as it goes up and down and it
adds a whole new kind of sound to the music that naturally comes from the
visualized music.
Awesome! Have you ever thought of combinung it with the technology used to
create sound in a defined space by overlapping ultrasonic waves (as they
are developing in the automotive industry to send different sounds to
different passengers). Maybe then you could increase the “resolution” and
acutally create images. Wouldn’t that be cool?
