Science: Massive 2D Rubens Tube Of Over 2500 Holes Driven By Sound and Music

From the site:

Rubens’ Tube is an awesome demo and here we take it to the next level with a two-dimensional ‘Pyro Board’. This shows unique standing wave patters of sound in the box.

The pressure variations due to the sound waves affect the flow rate of flammable gas from the holes in the Pyro Board and therefore affect the height and colour of flames. This is interesting for visualizing standing wave patterns and simply awesome to watch when put to music. Thank you to Sune Nielsen and everyone at Aarhus for sharing this demonstration with me! And thanks for having me at your conference.

Nice to know that Veritasium didn’t know what standing waves are. 😀

Whole channel is worth watching 🙂

watching the flames while the music is playing is very hypnotic & calming
    almost.

    Watch #fire and #sound interacting!

  23. DuckMySee

The video shows the low flames on the Ruben tube as being at nodes – but
actually aren’t the flames *higher* at the nodes? The motion of the gas at
the anti-nodes should produce a lower pressure (Bernouli’s principle), and
therefore lower flame height, shouldn’t it? The nodes should be at a
higher pressure, being the compression part of the standing wave, therefore
    emit more gas?

I’m still sad i didn’t meet you when you were in czechia, you gotta come
    back some time again.

Hello, Actually I am designing a Pyro Board of my own. im 17 and plan to be
an Engineer for my career. in my High School we have an Engineering program
and im in my Final stage, Research and Development. I have a simplistic
design of a 2.5ft x 2.5ft box with about 3,000+ holes in a square pattern
similar to the Pyro Board from Fyshics channel. im lucky to have a CNC
machine available to help make accurate holes and precise chamfers but
limited to a 40″ x 20″ travel. Also, since I have this as my project I cant
really make it exactly the same :(. so I need to put my physics and
Ingenuity skills to the test and create a whole new type of plane from the
rubens tube. 😀 I just need to get a deeper understanding of how the
vibrations travel through the gas and how, that if its possible, make it so
that I create a plane but it… ahh cant speak anymore might give it away
    😉

  29. Christopher LaLonde

I want to make it so that it is a whole new way of showing off the 2D
plane…. but that it inst just a square board, ill have to convince my
teacher that I need to make this example along with a whole new type of
    plane that isn’t a box * Hint Hint 😉

This is some pretty cool stuff. Can I have a few for the house?!?

  31. Tracer

This is not really 2D.But it is still a good experiment.

  32. Tracer

*But u cant make anything really 2D in our world. The only place where you
can make an 2D object is the cyber world.*

  33. flash

Can u guys do this video in slow motion also

  34. Doctor Pyro

    I can only imagine dubstep…

  35. XavierBetoN

It would have higher presicion of reaction if it was round shaped tho..

Imagine making a giant metal background board for a concert stage with this
setup. Nine Inch Nails would have loved it. Someone should do this idea.
You could split the giant board into multiple smaller ones for transport..
    Any takers?

  42. Robert Nuttall

Any chance of going back and playing a Shepards Tone down it, it would be
    interesting to see

I think it’s weird that his lights automatically go out once the fire is
    lit.

  44. Samuel Girmay

Awesome! now do this with “300 violin orchestra” playing. that would be
    epic!!!

  45. rafael bacci

Hey man, great board, youve inspired us to make the same thing for a
science fair here in Barranquilla Colombia, its great work, do you have an
email adress where i can contact you to ask a couple of questions? thanks +
