Science: Massive 2D Rubens Tube Of Over 2500 Holes Driven By Sound and Music

From the site:

Rubens’ Tube is an awesome demo and here we take it to the next level with a two-dimensional ‘Pyro Board’. This shows unique standing wave patters of sound in the box.

The pressure variations due to the sound waves affect the flow rate of flammable gas from the holes in the Pyro Board and therefore affect the height and colour of flames. This is interesting for visualizing standing wave patterns and simply awesome to watch when put to music. Thank you to Sune Nielsen and everyone at Aarhus for sharing this demonstration with me! And thanks for having me at your conference.

Music by Kevin MacLeod, www.Incompetech.com “Ice Flow”

Pretty sweet!

Yay, Denmark! I’m planning on studying physics in the future, so if you get
here in 5 or so years I’ll be happy to help make a video 😀

This is way too cool. Fire is mesmerizing enough without it dancing to
    music!

ok so next obvious step is a big spinning rubens sphere . . . . or would
    that explode?

Nerd notes. At :41, aren’t the high-pressure places, corresponding to tall
flames, the places where the velocity is smallest? What’s shown might be
    the opposite.

The guy explaining it says that the flames are higher some places because
of a higher velocity gas coming out, but this is the result of high
pressure locations inside the tube, which corresponds (counterintuitively)
to low-velocity locations along the tube.

Pyro Board —

*Watch what happens when they pump some music into the board, for science
    of course :-)*
A Rubens’ tube (also known as a standing wave flame tube or flame tube) is
a physics apparatus for demonstrating acoustic standing waves. Invented by
German physicist Heinrich Rubens in 1905, it graphically shows the
relationship between sound waves and sound pressure. But, this is taken to
    the next level!
